Determination of Weld Loads and Throat Requirements Using Finite Element Analysis with Shell Element Models — A Comparison with Classical Analysis

چکیده

Finite element analysis (FEA) has become a practical method of predicting stresses and deflection for loaded structures. FEA accurately identifies the load path, which can be difficult using classical analysis with complex structures. FEA shell element models are effective for predicting loads in weldments fabricated from plate, sheet, structural shapes and tube. The formulation used for a finite element shell model is that of full penetration welds at every joint. Although the loads carried through joints are calculated by FEA, they are not readily presentable. This article presents a method to derive the loads at weld joints from the stress results of FEA shell element models. Additionally, using the calculated weld loads, weld throat stresses or size requirements are calculated using classical methods.

Investigating the Effect of Joint Geometry of the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding Process on the Residual Stress and Distortion using the Finite Element Method

Although a few models have been proposed for 3D simulation of different welding processes, 2D models are still more effective in design goals, thus more popular due to the short-time analysis. In this research, replacing "time" by the "third dimension of place", the gas tungsten arc welding process was simulated by the finite element method in two dimensions and in a short time with acceptable ...

Buckling Analysis of Composite Lattice Cylindrical Shells with Ribs Defects

In this paper, the buckling behavior of a composite lattice cylindrical shell is studied and effects of rib defects on the distribution of stress field and buckling response of the shell is investigated. A three dimensional finite element buckling analysis of the lattice shell is carried out using ANSYS suit of program. Geometrical data and material properties of the shell are obtained from the...

A Continuum Shell-beam Finite Element Modeling of Buried Pipes with 90-degree Elbow Subjected to Earthquake Excitations

In the current work, the seismic analysis of bent region in buried pipes is performed, and effects of soil properties and modeling methods on pipe’s response are investigated. To do this task Beam, Beam-Shell Finite Element modeling and a Continuum shell FE models of a 90 degrees elbow are employed. In the Beam model, the pipe is simulated by beam elements while combined shell-beam elements a...
